Red Common
Spain / 2023
“Red Common” embodied fusion, embracing adaptive reuse at Pelayos de la Presa’s Monastery of Santa María de Valdeiglesias. Balancing reverence and innovation, it revitalized ancient stones with purposeful design. Terracotta hues unified the city, contrasting the monastery’s weathered facades with contemporary structures. Arch-inspired design language infused the extension, linking heritage with modern function, morphing it into a space for community placemaking, fostering connections between eras. This unity breathed life into the city, where tradition and modernity wove a vibrant tapestry.
Terracotta, a revival of history, seamlessly merged with ruins, narrating the city’s tale, merging past and present in a vibrant symphony of contrasts. Three ruins, rejuvenated with arches and terracotta, found harmony amid nature, becoming serene shelters embodying tranquility and history.
The extension’s architectural plan birthed two new courtyards, expanding to three vibrant event spaces. Placemaking engaged the local community, adorning these venues with vibrancy, turning them into canvases for shared stories and gatherings. This synthesis of heritage and contemporary life breathed new narratives into the city’s fabric, weaving a seamless tapestry of tradition, innovation, and community spirit.
